The Benefits of Acupuncture

I have been doing acupuncture since I was 17 years old and I cannot even begin to tell you how much it has benefitted my overall health. At age 19 I was diagnosed with Hashimotos, an auto-immune disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid. Acupuncture helped tremendously in stabilizing my thyroid. Moreover, it has helped me raise my immunity, balance my hormones, lower my period cramps, clear up my skin from acne, heal my acne scar, deal my stress during these uncertain times... I try to do at least one session a month and it is probably one of the most healing and calming moments of the month.

What is acupuncture?

*Notes from my acupuncturist

Acupuncture is a practice that emerged from Tradicional Oriental Medicine and consists on inserting needles in specific points of the body to treat all kinds of injuries or diseases such as asthma, auto-immune diseases, migraines, allergies, drug and nicotine addictions, infertility, all kinds of pain... and the list goes on and on.

In Traditional Oriental Medicine acupuncture is a full medical system, and is seen as a technique to balance the flow of energy known as "Qi". Qi is believed to flow through channels or meridians in the body. When illnesses or pain arise, certain points along the meridian get clogged and by placing fine needles at these specific points, the flow of energy is rebalanced. Each acupuncture point or combination of points have a different impact on the body.

The needles work both at a local level and at a holistic level; locally they reduce inflammation, promote circulation and relieve pain. Holistically, they improve the functions of several systems such as the immune system, the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the endocrine system. The neurotransmitters are also targeted and balanced by the needles, which is what makes us feel relaxed and calm throughout the sessions, and leave us with a feeling of well-being afterwards.

What benefits does acupuncture have?

  1. Reduces pain: acupuncture regulates the central nervous system which is beneficial to relieve chronic and acute pain.

  2. Treats autoimmune diseases.

  3. Releases stress and anxiety: acupuncture helps alleviate symptoms caused by stress. The needles restore the balance of the body's energy, which lead to a state of relaxation. It has also been shown that acupuncture can help reduce depression.

  4. Aids with insomnia: acupuncture has been proven to help improve the quality of sleep.

  5. Reduces the side effects of cancer treatments.

  6. Promotes circulation: it is effective in treating inflammation and varicose veins. Improves wound healing and reduces muscle edema.

  7. Strengthens the immune system: acupuncture increases our defenses against viruses and bacteria.

  8. Helps with infertility and many other gynecological diseases.

  9. Treats nicotine and other drug addictions.

  10. Treats migraines.

  11. Helps with asthma and allergies.

If you are dealing with any of these conditions I highly recommend adding Acupuncture to your routine to complement any other medical measures you are taking.
